The Allure of Niagara Falls

One of the most breath-taking sights in North America is Niagara Falls. It is an attraction for people of all cultures, as well as families, couples, and of course, a favorite destination for honeymooners.  The Falls are on the border between New York State and Ontario, Canada and are known for such breathtaking stunts as going over in a barrel or walking over the Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

The USA side of the Falls is one of three waterfalls that as a combination are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River, along the Canadian and American border. Two-thirds of the Falls are on the Canadian side in Ontario and known as Horseshoe Falls.  The American Falls are in the state of New York.

More and more, the fascination of the Falls have become its uniqueness and its beauty. Separated by Goat Island, the larger part, Horseshoe Falls, is 185 feet, and the length of its crest line that curves is about 2,200 feet. The American Falls are 190 feet and 1,060 feet across.

The glamour of the Falls is at night when they are lit up in a rainbow of colors. People from around the world visit for the boat tours, and they pass by both Falls. The American Boat tour to consider is The Maid of the Mist. The Canadian boat tour to take is The Hornblower. There are sunset cruises available that can include the voyage to the Falls with time to meet new friends, hobnob and enjoy the bottom of the gorge. The boats also have expanding walls on the lower level so they are able to operate in the rain and later into the year with heaters to keep passengers warm.

Something interesting to note is that the water flowing over the Falls is free of debris, and its cleanliness contributes to the beauty of the cascade. In acknowledgement of the Falls as an amazing natural marvel, New York State and Ontario Province purchased the title to the neighboring lands and altered them into parks for public use. Also, very recently the grand diversion of water above the Falls is used for hydroelectric-power and has lessened the rate of erosion.

For those who want to walk across, there is the Rainbow Bridge, which spans the Niagara gorge about 1,000 feet downstream from Prospect Point. Visitors have the opportunity to cross from the United States shore to Goat Island by footbridge and then take an elevator to the foot of the Falls. This allows them to visit the Cave of the Winds behind the curtain of falling water.

With a country full of majestic wonders, Niagara Falls is definitely worth the visit – and an item to absolutely put on your bucket list.
