Patel and Sobrinho Earn Girl Scout Silver Awards

Lantern Lane Elementary Librarian Phyllis Kinsey with Girl Scouts Amanda Sobrinho and Priya Patel.

Fort Settlement Middle School 8th graders and members of local Fort Bend County Troop 19192, Priya Patel and Amanda Sobrinho, received their Girl Scout Silver Awards for their Free Book Exchange Program.

The Silver Award project addressed the issue of inadequate access to books over the summer when the school library is closed. Kids lose interest in reading, and it affects their reading skills when they return to school. The Free Book Exchange was designed to benefit these children by giving them a place where they can easily access multiple books and help maintain their reading skills.

Sobrinho and Patel led a community book drive collecting over 1300 books from local citizens and also assembled three bookcases. The donated books were used to create easily accessible, shared libraries for their three adopted Fort Bend ISD schools Heritage Rose and Lantern Lane Elementary Schools and Missouri City Middle School.
