October 2018 – Exclamation Points!

It’s a VICTORY in the battle against cancer! Thirty-two years ago, VICTORY, a volunteer branch of the American Cancer Society (ACS), created the Cattle Baron’s Ball, one of the most successful fundraising events in the nation. VICTORY President Jerre’ Williams and member Susan Ryan welcomed VICTORY’s newest member Patti Parish-Kaminski at the fall meeting. Williams and Ryan served as the co-chairs of the 2018 Cattle Baron’s Ball, and they presented ACS with a check for over $3 million from the event to help ACS beat cancer.

Fall – Finally! –

In Anne of Green Gables, Anne Shirley, the main character and a spunky redhead, said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”  Well, this spunky redhead couldn’t agree more!  October is one of my favorite months out of the year.  We can finally get some “winterish” clothes out, football season is in full swing, and there’s just so many fun things to do with friends and family.

Speaking of friends and family, Sienna Plantation kicks off their Friends & Family Home Tour this month with two amazing events:  Cirque La Vie in October and Sienna Sip & Stroll in November.  Ranked as the Houston area’s top-selling community, Sienna Plantation has something for everyone.

And, this issue of Fort Bend Focus  also has something for everyone.  The Fort Bend calendar is packed with events from galas to church bazaars to Halloween activities for our little ghouls.  But if staying close to home isn’t in your plans, check out our new travel column by Alisa Murray – Globetrotting – and learn about family fun in Turks and Caicos with some family favorites:  the Sesame Street characters!

Regardless of if you are traveling or staying around the Bend this month, early voting begins October 22nd, and I would like to encourage everyone to get out and vote.  There are several local elections on the ballot, and these are the elected officials who impact our lives on a regular basis.  We have listed early voting locations on page 26, and you can early vote at any location.

Finally, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in our Focus on the Cure section, we bring you important information about early detection, cancer prevention and treatment options.  So many of us have loved ones who have been affected by this dreaded disease, and shining the spotlight on the amazing physicians and organizations who work tirelessly to not only treat individuals but to help find a cure is an important part of our mission at Fort Bend Focus.

I hope your kick-off to fall is amazing, and Happy Halloween to all of our little readers!  Be safe!

Stay focused!
