Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Opens 24/7 Obstetrical Emergency Center

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital has opened a 24/7 Obstetrical Emergency Center, giving expectant mo-thers and families in the area round-the-clock access to specialized care.

“The needs of mother and baby in a medical emergency can vary drastically and may be impacted by any number of unique factors that aren’t present in a typical adult or pediatric emergency room visit,” said Teresa Criswell, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. “Our OB Emergency Center gives patients immediate access to a physician and staff who can best meet their healthcare needs.”

The Memorial Hermann Sugar Land OB Emergency Center is covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week with dedicated nurses and a McGovern Medical School at UTHealth OB/GYN hospitalist. Beyond providing immediate care, the OB Emergency Center staff will consult, coordinate and communicate with the patient’s OB/GYN when possible.

“In order to provide the best care possible, it’s really important to work with a patient’s dedicated OB/GYN to gain a better overall understanding of all health aspects to the pregnancy,” Criswell said. “That interaction with the patient’s OB/GYN ultimately ensures the best possible outcome for the mother and the baby.”

Patients should notify their OB/GYN prior to coming to the OB Emergency Center, if possible.

Common reasons to visit the OB Emergency Center are suspected pre-term labor; vaginal bleeding; complications related to high-risk pregnancy; infection and pelvic and abdominal pain. An average of 150 pregnant patients visit the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land obstetrical triage each month.

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Women’s and Children’s Services includes a high-risk pregnancy clinic at The Fa-mily Birthing Center and a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with 24-hour neonatal coverage. The hospital has also been designated as a Texas Ten Step facility each of the last eight years for its efforts to support the health of breastfeeding mothers and their children.

If a higher level of care is needed, patients have direct access maternal-fetal medicine specialists at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and  Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
