Meet Asha Milan Abdullah

By Joan Frances –

As a senior at Elkins High School, Asha Abdullah is a hard-working student with proven leadership skills and the ability to create positive interactions with others from diverse backgrounds. She has achieved success in academics, sports and extracurricular activities and is looking forward to an exciting future.

Abdullah has taken Advanced Placement (AP) classes throughout her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Scholars Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, Student Council, Interact Club, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Youth Expanding Services (YES). She has received the Academic Excellence Award every year.

Abdulla’s leadership skills are admirable, and she is the senior class president. “Being a leader for the senior class as president is fulfilling to me because I’m able to be a voice for my peers. I’m able to coordinate events and communicate with the administrators at Elkins to help create a positive atmosphere.”

Abdulla’s favorite teacher is Ms. Hannah Enad, who teaches sophomore English. “She’s remarkably supportive and genuinely cares about all of her students. She drove an hour to watch me in my regional track meet, encouraged me to run for senior class president and helped me for weeks with my college essays.”

In addition to Abdullah’s academic accomplishments, she is a talented runner. She has been a member of the Varsity Cross Country team since sophomore year. This year, she is the team captain and medaled as one of the top 20 runners in the district, achieving a new personal record.

A value Abdullah lives by is best effort. “I think it’s important to try my best so that I won’t have any regrets in the future from not challenging myself. Looking back at what I’ve participated in throughout high school, I’m happy knowing I did the best that I could. John Wooden said, ‘Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.’”

Abdullah has respect and support from her peers. Every year, she has been a member of the Homecoming Court. This year, she was voted queen. Her years at Elkins have been very fulfilling. “One thing I will treasure the most about my high school experience is the diversity, and the opportunities I have received from being at Elkins. I’ve been able to meet people of various cultures and grow over the past four years as a person. The environment is comfortable, but I am also challenged by my classmates and teachers who equip me to be successful and accomplish my goals after graduating.”

During free time, Abdullah generously volunteers at the Houston Food Bank, Rotary Books for the World, Hope for Three Autism Advocates, Second Mile Mission Center, Lunches of Love, Santa’s Exchange, Toys for Tots, Houston Hispanic Forum, the South Western Aquatic Team swim meets and the Chevron Houston Marathon. She is also engaged in many activities at Elkins such as the Open House, the Homecoming Prep Committee, the Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALS) carnival, Freshman Orientation Committee and the Courtyard Decorating Beautification project. She aspires to attend Howard University and will pursue a major in Finance with a minor in Marketing.

Congratulations Asha Abdullah for your undeniable commitment and leadership skills. Good luck as you continue to accomplish all your goals in the future.
