Faith In Practice’s Annual Gala will Raise Funds to Provide Life-Changing Medical Care to the Poor of Guatemala

On Friday, October 19th, Faith In Practice, a nonprofit committed to serving the poor of Guatemala through short-term medical mission trips, will host their 2018 Gala at the Hilton Americas-Houston. The theme of this year’s gala is “Guided by the Humble” based on a quote from William Temple: “The source of humility is the habit of realizing the presence of God.”

This year’s event celebrates the humble service and inspiring commitment of volunteers Dr. Gene and Mrs. Kathy Huebner and Mr. Kenneth and Mrs. Donna Wine.  As in past years, the goal of the event is to raise money for vital medical, surgical and dental care that Faith In Practice teams provide to the poor of Guatemala.

The Huebners have been involved with Faith In Practice since 1995, starting with one of the first Faith In Practice mission trips. Dr. Gene Huebner, who is a surgeon and Perinatal Director and Vice-Chief of Staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, has taken on an additional role as a team leader on Faith In Practice mission trips. Kathy Huebner, a registered nurse, joins him in providing support and leadership to the Huebner Surgery Team each year as a co-administrator.

When reflecting about their first mission trip with Faith In Practice, Kathy said, “We got down here, and the people just totally changed our perspective—or God changed our perspective through them. They were so humble; the need was so great.”

Regarding their continued trips to Guatemala each year, Dr. Huebner remarked, “To paraphrase one of our former preachers, once you’ve come, you can’t keep from not coming back. There’s an attraction here that you get as soon as you get into Antigua. You meet the people, you see the beauty of the place. Very soon you realize the poverty these people are going through, their humility, and the great need.”

The Wines have also been involved with Faith In Practice since the organization’s early years. Kenneth Wine has served on the Faith In Practice Board of Directors since 2005. With his experience in hospital administration, including his work in the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, he has provided guidance and hospital administration expertise to Faith In Practice. Wine also serves on the Faith In Practice Administrative and Finance Committee.

The 2018 gala is made possible by the generosity of event co-chairs Mary Favre and Dr. Robert and Elizabeth Morrow.

While the event will be an opportunity to honor the Huebners and Wines, it will also give attendees the chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of the Guatemalan patients who depend on the medical services offered by Faith In Practice volunteers.

Attendees of the gala will have the opportunity to purchase unique artisan items from Guatemala from the Mercado, as well as the chance to win fantastic bid board items. Proceeds will go toward the life-changing medical mission of Faith In Practice in Guatemala.
