The Culinary Chaos Continues

By Patti Parish-Kaminski, Publisher

Clawcaine? Really? No thank you, Mr. Kaminski.

For the record, Mr. Kaminski is no longer allowed to select culinary outlets for dining.  It’s just not working out for me.

Last Saturday while in Galveston, he was on the gumbo train.  I get it.  We were on the coast where seafood abounds.  It makes sense to want gumbo – in the winter.  When it’s a hundred and hell outside, the only hot, spicy thing I want to see is my reflection in the mirror.

I should have known better, but honestly, food really isn’t my thing.  It used to be – 50 plus pounds ago.  But I’ve learned my lesson.  Copious amounts of food are not my friend.  I can eat cheese and crackers and be just fine.

But alas, food is a thing for Mr. Kaminski.  It’s probably because I use my kitchen cabinets for shoe storage.  I’ve never been a Betty or a Martha, but I do warm well.

Actually, that warming comment is not one hundred percent true.  Just this past weekend I put a plastic plate with the slightest silver rim on it in the microwave.  I did ask my girlfriend before I did it.  Neither of us felt it was an issue.  We were wrong. To my credit, I halted the process before flames ensued.  I call that a win, especially since I’m 3 and 3 for fires: microwave, hot rollers, Mercedes Benz.

But I digress – back to gumbo.  Mr. Kaminski ordered a steaming hot bowl of gumbo.  I just couldn’t.  The color is very dark and ominous, and I’m not certain what all those critters are in there.  It’s just not my jam.  And it was August, triple digits, remember?

I decided I could eat a couple of his fried shrimp, fried stuff not really being my jam either, but what’s a girl to do.  I ate his cole slaw, him not eating it since it was green and all, so I was happy.

There was a cardboard six-pack container of various spices on the table.  Upscale, this gumbo joint.  Of course, Mr. Kaminski had to both investigate and try, as well as try to get me to try.  Bless his heart.

His spice of choice? Clawcaine.  I’m done.  Just done.  See y’all next week – on the porch!
