Sugar Land Student Journalist to Report “News for Kids, by Kids”

A local seventh-grader from Sugar Land was selected as a Kid Reporter in the award-winning Scholastic News Kids Press Corps – a team of talented young reporters, ages 10 – 14, from across the country and around the world.

Benjamin Who, a 13-year-old from Sugar Land, will write “News for Kids, by Kids” as one of 45 Kid Reporters in the 2018 – 19 program year, covering current events, breaking news, entertainment stories and sporting events from his hometown and on the national stage. “I’ve noticed that the world around us is filled with heroes who often go by unnoticed – volunteers, service workers and influential people. Being selected as a Scholastic News Kid Reporter will allow me to spotlight these people who work tirelessly to improve and enrich their communities,” Who said.

This year the award-winning Scholastic News Kids Press Corps  welcomed 23 new and 22 returning Kid Reporters ages 10 – 14 to cover national and international breaking news, trending topics kids care most about – from the environment to civics – along with entertainment, sports, local news and more for their peers. This team of Kid Reporters will be covering news from ten countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, India, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea and Thailand.

“Each year, it becomes increasingly evident how passionate students are about engaging in their communities and following the news,” said Suzanne McCabe, Editor of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps. “This year’s talented team of 45 Kid Reporters have committed to covering the hard-hitting topics that students around the world want to learn more about, while developing the critical thinking and media literacy skills that are so important for their futures.”

The Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has been publishing “news for kids, by kids” since 2000. During the 2017 – 18 program year, Kid Reporters covered a range of topics and events, including Hurricanes Harvey and Maria; the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C.; Super Bowl LII and the 2018 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Scholastic News Kid Reporters also interviewed news anchors Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric; New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge; U.S. Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad; retired NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson; president and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund Marian Wright Edelman; A
