Sugar Land’s Alex Amen is on the verge of an exciting breakthrough in his music career. He recently signed a publishing deal with American Records, led by the legendary producer Rick Rubin.
American Records welcomed Amen to their roster of songwriters, impressed by the songs he crafted for his independently produced album and his distinctive style and talents. Amen released his debut single “California Blues” on October 24th. It is available across all streaming platforms.
With a unique blend of folk, country, and rock influences and inspired by his musical heroes John Denver, Neil Young and Jimmy Buffett, Amen’s music feels both fresh and familiar. “California Blues,” was penned by a teenage Amen in his bedroom in the suburbs of Houston, before he even set foot in California. It captures the loneliness and superficiality he imagined could accompany life in a bustling city like Los Angeles. Those early impressions proved remarkably prescient when Amen eventually made the move to LA. “California Blues” is a testament to Amen’s remarkable story telling abilities and his keen observations of the world around him. Its release represents a very full circle moment for this young man with an old soul.
“Getting this album recorded demanded a nonconformist approach, reminiscent of the legendary Laurel Canyon music scene that inspires me,” said Alex Amen. “I hope the song resonates with anyone who has ever felt lost in a crowded place and that listeners will find connection in the desire to slow down and connect with each other despite their surroundings or circumstances.”
Amen grew up in Sugar Land where he attended Fort Bend Christian High School and studied piano under Houston musician and pianist Ted Wenglinski. Amen graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Guitar in 2023. He plans to announce Texas tour dates later this year.
