Mental Health America of Fort Bend County is hosting a Barnyard Bash on October 13th, 2017 at Regal Ranch in Stafford from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. The event features an evening of dancing and music and an opportunity to support an organization working to improve the mental wellness of Fort Bend County. The featured speaker is Sheriff Troy Nehls and guests of honor are the Crisis Intervention Team of Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office.
It is a natural fit for these two organizations to share the stage. Both Mental Health America of Fort Bend County (MHAFBC) and the Crisis Intervention Team of Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office share the same goal: diverting people living with mental illness from the criminal justice system and into mental health care. MHAFBC strives toward that goal by increasing awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental illness, encouraging early intervention, publishing a directory which lists hundreds of mental health resources and is involved with community outreach. The Crisis Intervention Team has trained over 600 law enforcement officers on how to de-escalate someone experiencing a mental health crisis and how to guide people to mental health care. Lieutenant Soland, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, stated, “Our collaboration with Mental Health America of Fort Bend County has proven to be an effective avenue for citizens to gain access to mental health care. The Behavioral Health Resource Guide is a valuable tool for officers when they encounter a person living with mental illness or in a mental health crisis.”
