Memory Madness

Surprise memory moments – best thing ever!

It’s been brought to my attention recently that an interesting yet disturbing phenomenon is occurring in my world, many times on a daily basis.  This particular phenomenon is new and definitely has its own ebb and flow.

Mr. Kaminski attributes this new nuisance to me getting older.  It’s alright; he will be fine.  He’s a quick healer.  The bruise on his arm will disappear lickity split.

This perplexing, evolving situation has me shook.  I have spent my life akin to an elephant.  I don’t forget anything.  My people know this about me.  I am the family Encyclopedia Britannica.  This memorable gift is both a blessing and a curse, and I have been known to misremember certain instances.  However, in my defense, I have both a vivid imagination along with several folks living in my head.  Ergo, this misremembering thing is to be expected.

This current memory misdemeanor is new and quite unwelcome.  It’s made the speedometer my normal list-making protocol climb to warp speed on the daily.  Typically, I have made small, note-size “to do” lists on the daily, complete said list and discard.  Now I have a spiral notebook “to do” list, and there’s an entire page for each day.  And there’s no discarding as I’m referencing days back – just to be sure.

While all of this sounds negative – which I really do not aspire to ever be negative – I have discovered an upside.  For example, I now can conveniently “forget” things, and Mr. Kaminski gives me instant grace.  That’s new, and honestly, it takes some of the pressure off the day to day mundane and madness.

“What’s for dinner, honey?” is a perfect example.

“Oh, my goodness!  I was so engrossed in my work I completely forgot the time,” my heartfelt reply, otherwise known as a convenient memory lapse.

“That’s fine.  I’ll pick something up for us.”  See how that works?

Of course, by far the best benefit of this memory madness is the retail surprises. You see, I like to shop online.  My favorite retailers are my friends.  I know this because they regularly send me emails and texts with amazing discounts and free shipping.  Very thoughtful.  I like to watch Tiky Tok and review Facebook regularly.  This particular activity is nocturnal and traditionally happens with two important items in tow: a glass of wine and a credit card.  I suspect that contributes to the memory situation.  But the best news is when packages show up at my door, I have absolutely no recall of what they contain, how much they cost or when I ordered them.  It’s like Christmas all year – surprise!

So maybe this memory thing isn’t so bad after all.  See y’all next week – on the porch!
