Four-Time Grammy Winner Lizzo Reads Inspirational Children’s Book to Jones Elementary Students

Four-time Grammy Award winner Lizzo made a surprise appearance at the Missouri City Branch Library to read her children’s book, Lil Lizzo and Sasha B. Flootin’, to first-grade students from Fort Bend ISD’s Jones Elementary School.

The inspirational story follows a bubbly young girl who wants to belong and a sassy flute searching for its tune. Inspired by Lizzo’s own journey of self-discovery, the book encourages children to find their voices and develop a love for music.

“I grew up here in Houston, Texas when I was your age,” Lizzo said. “I was shy and I didn’t have any friends, but I found my confidence through music. So, I wrote this book to share with young people like you so you can find confidence and your voice.”

In the story, Lil Lizzo and her flute, Sasha B. Flootin’, embark on an adventure through a jungle, the ocean and outer space, discovering sounds and music along the way. During the reading, Lizzo sang and danced with students and played her flute.  Throughout their journey, Lil Lizzo and Sasha B. Flootin’ learn the value of friendship and discovered that the best song they can sing is their own.

“The music that came when they played from the heart was funky and joyful, it was real, it was art,” Lizzo read. “They didn’t need sounds from anyone else, they were friends having fun just being themselves.”

At the conclusion of the event, each student received an autographed copy of the book and a toy flute.
