Michael Bevers, M.D., and Nicole Fleming, M.D., have joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Regional Care Center in Sugar Land, bringing the area a new level of expertise for treating gynecologic cancers.

Bevers and Fleming, both gynecologic oncologists, lead a multidisciplinary team in Sugar Land. The collaborative and specialized team approach ensures that each patient receives the highest level of cancer care from physicians and advanced practice nurses who specialize in uterine, endometrial and ovarian cancers, and rare vaginal and vulvar cancers. Gynecologic oncologists are unique not only because of the cancers they treat, but because they perform surgery as well as oversee chemotherapy or other therapies.

Bevers, Fleming and the team offer a range of minimally invasive procedures, including robotic-assisted laparoscopy, for appropriate patients with cervical, endometrial and early-stage ovarian cancers. This surgical innovation has revolutionized care for many patients with gynecologic malignancies while improving quality of life, and is now available to more patients.

“We care for patients with many types of gynecologic cancer, as well as patients with pre-invasive  disease. Further, we are available to provide a second opinion on suspected cancers,” Bevers said. “We believe that the patient is an important member of her care team, and we work to ensure that she and her family fully understand her treatment plan.”

Fleming added, “Until now, women in this community have not had access to the type of multidisciplinary care we provide. Our team approach to cancer care allows us to help our patients through their initial diagnosis, surgery and additional therapies that follow, including access to clinical trials. We continue their care with close surveillance up to several years after their initial diagnosis. We are involved in every aspect of their cancer care.”

As MD Anderson faculty members, Bevers and Fleming also hold academic positions in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology.  They are part of a team of five specialized surgeons now at the Sugar Land Regional Care Center.  They join John Papadopoulos, M.D., who specializes in genitourinary surgery, Mark Zafereo, M.D., who specializes in head and neck surgery, and Susan Hoover, M.D. who focuses on breast surgery. Bevers also leads a gynecologic oncology team at the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Katy.

The Sugar Land center is among four regional care centers bringing MD Anderson’s standard of care into the surrounding Houston community.  It is located on the campus of St. Luke Hospital’s Sugar Land campus.
