The Teacake Factory

The history of teacakes spans hundreds of years, and in different cultures, the teacake isn’t always the same.

A popular staple descending from African American culture, teacakes were initially made over an open fire. The pastry derives from tea sandwiches and cakes from the early 1800’s when having tea was common. In northern England, a teacake is a round bread roll which is cut in half to make sandwiches. In other parts of England, a teacake is a light, sweet, yeast-based bun containing dried fruits, most usually currants, sultanas or peel. It is typically split, toasted, buttered, and served with tea.

In Sweden, the word for teacake (tekaka) refers to a sweetened, wheat soda bread, resembling an Irish farl and served warm with butter and jam and often, cheese. In the Southeastern United States, a teacake is a traditional dense, large cookie made with sugar, butter, eggs, flour, milk, and flavoring. In Australia, a teacake is typically a heavier sponge cake.

D’Ann successfully opened the Laeral Dance Academy and Performing Arts Studio in Missouri City in September of 2010. Now, former dancer and studio owner, is ready for another challenge, “setting the stage” and “raising the barre” for classical ballet as Founder and Executive Director of The Missouri City Ballet, MCB.
