Glass-Encapsulated Miniatures On Display

The First Colony Library, 2121 Austin Parkway, will feature an exhibit of glass-encapsulated miniatures in the lobby from the studio of Sugar Land resident Burton D. Reckles. The art pieces include a variety of miniatures encased in bottles, light bulbs, and pocket-watch cases. The collection includes traditional ships-in-bottles, humorous dioramas, whimsical children’s fantasy scenes and more. The exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours. Fantasy Re-Wind Film Series
The Sienna Branch Library will feature a free ’80s Fantasy Re-Wind Film Series at 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd. The movie on January 10 is a fantasy story in which a young teenage babysitter inadvertently sends her baby brother into her favorite story book. This movie is rated PG. On January 24, see an award-winning film set in the medieval city of Aquila starring Matthew Broderick. This movie is rated PG-13. On January 31, see a live-motion animation film created by Muppet masters Jim Henson and Franz Oz. This movie is rated PG. Call 281-238-2900.

Learn How To Research Your Family History
Begin your family-history research at the George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview. On the 11th, library staff will provide a basic introduction to many of the resources that are available for genealogical research. On the 18th, in “Build Your Family Tree Online,” participants will learn how to create a family-tree website. Participants will need an email account. Reservations are required. The Fort Bend Master Gardeners will present “Gardens to Attract Butterflies and Birds.” Learn about perennials and annuals to add year-round color to your landscape. The basics of bed preparation and disease control concepts and plants and landscape techniques to attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other birds to your yard will be addressed. Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation’s Founder’s Ball

A cast of local celebrities is scheduled to perform at this year’s Founders’ Ball themed ‘Texas Idol - Sugar Land Cultural Arts Style.’ In addition to enjoying entertainment, event-goers can bid for prizes in a live and silent auction. The gala is the Foundation’s most important annual event. The event will be held at Safari Texas and tickets are available for $100 each; a table for 10 is $1,000. Newborns Special Welcome During Children’s Book Week
Fort Bend County Libraries will distribute a special baby book bag, courtesy of the Friends of Fort Bend County Library, to newborns in Fort Bend. The bags will be distributed at OakBend Medical Center in Richmond, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital, and the Fort Bend Family Health Center to all children born that week.
